Members and colleagues of the Society met at the Amba Marble Arch Hotel for this year’s Annual General Meeting. This is a most relevant opportunity for STSD teachers to share the past year’s business and other information. This year, members had travelled from Sri Lanka, Scotland and around England. There is always a great buzz of conversation and delight to meet up again for new members and first time attendees.
After the AGM it was time to have the added programme for the day. This year we were to enjoy a creative and enrichment experience.
Fiona Bowen from the Shakespeare Schools Foundation spoke to us about this charity and their firm belief ‘every child deserves exciting, active lessons which give them a chance to achieve’. The SSF Charity gives young people across the UK the confidence to succeed in life. The world’s largest youth drama festival is part of this transformation process. We believe drama skills are life skills.
Jim Kay, our guest speaker enthralled us all will his work as an illustrator and artist in particular his illustrations of editions of ‘Harry Potter’. Jim spoke to us about his installation pieces for galleries, film and television. He has won many awards for his work as an illustrator for children’s books. Jim is interested in the idea of stories which combine history with the environment.
Time for lunch and more conversation. After lunch we had news, views and information. Our guest speaker for the afternoon was Dr Abigail Rokison-Woodall.
It was especially good to welcome back Abigail. She spoke to us about the New Arden Performance editions and the history of editing. Abigail has been working with Michael Dobson and Simon Russell-Beale. She has edited A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Hamlet. It was an enlightening and most creative talk from Abigail. We learned the why, the what and the how editing can change performances. Abigail’s humor and skills were much enjoyed.
Well, afternoon tea meant time to say farewell ‘till the next time.
