THANKS FROM OUR YOUNG STUDENTS WHO WERE AWARDED JOHN HOLGATE BURSARIES

THANKS FROM BURSARY STUDENTS

Arzhia Habibi writes:
Before writing this, I admittedly had to look up synonyms for the word amazing. For how could I possibly express my experiences at the Conference without continuously using that clichéd word? After winning the bursary to attend the STSD Conference I was overjoyed to be granted something that would allow me to take part in this event... But I was nervous. I would be around those who were talented, knowledgeable and extremely experienced. Well, how could a drama student like me not feel intimidated by such people? How wrong was I! After arriving at Chichester I was immediately aware of the kindness of the teachers and the care they took of passing on the knowledge of performance to younger generations. I felt instantly comfortable around everyone and an overwhelming sense of joy because I was in the kind of environment that I had so longed to be in! The highlights for me were Public Speaking with the wonderful Susan Ford and Annie Morrison’s lecture on Vocal Husbandry both captivating me with what they had to say, and of course, the banquet at the exquisite Vicars’ Hall where I and two other students dressed up in period costume to greet everyone (Shakespearian style) before they went in! The Conference was unforgettable. The people I met filled me with happiness, determination and hope. Finally I will reiterate what I said at Conference, “These adults know how to rave!”.

Matthew Needham writes:
I was absolutely delighted to be given a John Holgate Bursary, allowing me to come to STSD’s Chichester Summer Conference. Hoping to go into the world of acting, I saw the opportunity to take part in a range of workshops in courses such as Musical Theatre and Public Speaking, as highly valuable to me. What I did not expect however, was how much I’d benefit from the STSD teachers themselves. They were there to learn, not teach, yet they still opened up to me and unveiled many secrets, as it were, of how to achieve my true potential. Another thing which left me breathless was the open-mindedness of the group, and their thirst for knowledge. Taking in mind, every member of the group was already exceptionally talented and knowledgeable of their trade; I think it is astounding that everyone was so keen to learn. From the overall experience, I feel inspired to be the best person I can be and to help others along the way. I cannot thank the STSD enough. God bless.
Matthew Needham, Portslade, Brighton, Sussex

COMMENTS

As a former member, I thought I'd just have a look today at what's going on with the STSD. I found a much improved and impressively easy to use website, although as one advancing in years I do find the tiny print of the reports etc. very hard on the eyes. It's goos to see that the Society is still thriving. I enjoyed reading the conference reports. Made me wish I'd been there! Best wishes for 2010.
