If you were at the AGM, you will have noticed the stall for Samuel French Bookshop.  Many of you will have memories of browsing their shelves and buying stacks of play scripts there.   Sadly the book shop is closing.

However, you can still use your discount code for online shopping.

Bookseller, publisher and theatrical licensing company Samuel French Ltd today announces that its bookshop on Fitzroy Street will be closing in April 2017, following an unsustainable rental increase at the end of its current lease, with the entirety of its book-selling continuing on its established online shop.

The closure will see the company further expand its business online, where it already sells four out of five books. Its publishing and licensing departments will continue as usual from new offices in Euston. Recent digital developments by the company include the launch of Abbott, Samuel French’s e-reading platform for plays, and an expanded suite of online resources for actors. The next few months will also see the re-launch of the company’s renowned Acting Edition play text series, as well as an increasing range of events in London and around the UK.

Samuel French also announces today that it will donate a selection of its remaining theatre book stock to major UK drama schools and libraries when the shop closes in April.

Managing Director of Samuel French Douglas Schatz said today, “it is with a very heavy heart that we announce the closure of our bookshop in April – we’re extremely sad to see it go and send a huge thank you to all the staff and customers from all over the world who’ve supported the shop through the years. However, we are also very excited about the future of Samuel French, with the growth of our online shop, our innovation in digital play reading, the forthcoming relaunch of our Acting Edition play texts and our expanding catalogue of new authors”.

Samuel French is the leading licensor of plays to perform in the UK, with more than 6000 shows in its catalogue.

Samuel French’s Acting Editions are practical play texts designed for theatre practitioners, offering clear texts, and additional production content such as props lists, lighting and effects plots, and stage layouts. The list of published Acting Editions currently comprises more than 3000 titles. A completely redesigned version, with larger, clearer text and new cover designs, plus rugged coil-bound and large-print formats, will be released in March 2017.

The UK arm of the Samuel French business was founded by Thomas Hailes Lacy in 1830. Since then, the company has run a bookshop continually in various locations around London. The shop moved to its present location in Fitzroy Street in 1983.

Samuel French’s online bookstore is now the largest specialist theatre book shop online. The site offers a full range of plays and theatre books, as well as useful curated features for performers, students and teachers, backed up by expert advice from the company’s in-house service team.
